What exactly is the City Sewing Room?

We are a community sewing center,  where everyone is invited to come in and use the 10 large worktables, 12 sewing machines, including sergers, embroidery machine, fabric and supplies.  Drop in to sew whenever you need help on a project, want to learn to use your machine better or just share your love of sewing with others.

See the Classes section for times, prices and registration.

We are new to the Sewing and Creative scene and are exploring our options, so we are open to lots of ideas – like the individual sewing instructions, Sip N Sew, and custom sewing.   Since this is a new idea for St. Louis, we may be changing over the years, follow us as we grow.

Explain the Drop-In classes again.

Unique to the area, the drop-in theory works in that we never know when we may need help in setting a sleeve, making a buttonhole or just want to sew with other stitchers.  In coming to the City Sewing Room, you will share the workspace with sewers of all levels and be able to pick up ideas and helpful hints from each other.  The staff will always be available to answer questions and guide you in your personal project.   As the name implies, you do not need to make an appointment to come in,  just show up whenever you feel the need to relax with a needle and thread and release those creative ideas you have.  $10/hour or 10 hours for $80.

Do I need to bring anything for classes?

Only if you have a special project you are working on, or if you want to learn how to sew on your own machine you can bring it.  Otherwise we have all the machines, scissors, thread and bins and bins of remnant fabric to get you started, and some simple patterns and projects to start with.

When are the Sip 'N Sews?

Almost anytime you would want to schedule one.  Friday or Saturday evening.

Is that a dog I see under a table?

Yes it is.  Anne trains service dogs for Support Dogs Inc and so sometimes  brings the dog-in-training to the shop.  The dog is kenneled under Anne's worktable the entire class time.  If you are allergic to dogs, let us know and the dog can be left at home.

What about parking?

We have a 18 car private lighted parking lot in the rear of the building and the entrance to the building is right off the parking lot.  Very secure.  2 blocks from Hwy 44 and Jamieson.

Can boys come?

Of course!,  In fact we have a lot of men coming,  they missed out in HomeEc in high school and now would like to mend and alter their own clothes, and create new ones.

Do you do private lessons?

We can do private lessons by appointment,  but generally the Drop-in classes at $10/hour should be sufficient  for all the help you need.  Sometimes you will be the only student in the studio, sometimes there will be 2 or 3 other students.
